Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in First Address
During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
