British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
