This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the message is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, moving the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with many contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state de facto.

• The shortlist included several politicians, among them a reformer later murdered and a former spy chief.
• Per an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as 007. His harder version prompted Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. His influence is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
